Our production differs in two varieties of mandarins, clementines and mandarins mandarni Ciaculli late.
Mandarini Clementine
The clementine (Citrus × Clementine) is a citrus fruit, in the group of mandarins, which also includes the typical Mediterranean mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) and the Satsuma mandarins or Japanese. It is also commonly known by the name of clementine, probably due to the fact that is believed to be a hybrid between orange and mandarin.
The tree of clementine is very similar to the Mandarin, which is slightly different for the leaves that are larger and wider and does not have the characteristic aroma of mandarin. Flowers and fruits slowly and irregularly, as very susceptible to temperature changes. You have only one annual harvest between November and January.
The fruit resembles the Mandarin: the main differences are to be found in the color of the flesh, much more orange. Also it never flattened as mandarins, but always well-rounded. Such as Mandarin, peel and divide into segments with ease. The taste is rather more like orange, with a perfect balance between the bitter and the sweet.
The largest plantations are located in Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Italy (Calabria, Puglia and Sicily). In the US clementines we were grown since their appearance on the market, but they are really established only after 1977, when many of the Florida orange groves were destroyed by an exceptionally hard winter.
Mandarino tardivo di Ciaculli
The late mandarin Ciaculli, alias marzuddu, ie with maturity in March as opposed to the variety of primintivu, or early, owes its name to the hamlet of Palermo just Ciaculli, where it is grown.
It is a product placed between the garrisons Ark of Taste of Slow Food and the term late indicates that its production is delayed with respect to that of other citrus congeners.
